Wellington HELP usually hold our street appeal at the end of May. However, with covid-19 restrictions in place the traditional street appeal can't go ahead as planned.
The street appeal is HELP's biggest fundraiser of the year. It is also a key opportunity to talk to the community about sexual violence and ensure Wellingtonians know where to seek the support they need. This is a particularly important time to support survivors - sexual violence doesn't stop during the lockdown!
So, whilst we can't line the streets of Wellington, Porirua and Kāpiti, raising funds and awareness for survivors, we have decided to bring the appeal to our neighbourhoods instead!
HELP are inviting volunteers take part in Your Street Appeal by bringing the appeal to your street or immediate neighbourhood. We will be arming our volunteers with leaflets, quizzes and puzzles to distribute to nearby houses, inviting neighbours to take part and compete against one another - with social distancing adhered to of course. We anticipate Your Street Appeal will also take place amongst work colleagues and virtual networks - community comes in all shapes and sizes.
One of the wonderful outcomes of this period of rāhui (lockdown) is the community spirit it has ignited in Wellington neighbourhoods. Your Street Appeal is an opportunity to further engage with your neighbours and networks and fundraise for this important community service.
