Debbie, an Elected Artist Member of the New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts since 1981, has achieved much success both here and overseas. She is recognised in the fields of painting, doll art, sculpture, box art and pottery. She enjoys the complexities of deconstruction, and tearing fabrics and papers, to produce layered images.
She has won many awards for her art works, including the New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts award for her sculptures in the “Women Series” in 2001 and in 2004 was runner up in the New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts “Heritage Art Award” for her painting “Ancient Forest – Titahi Bay.” In 2009 and 2011 she won the Kapiti Rotary Art Award. More recently she has been creating box art assemblages, which included exhibiting her “Butterfly Vivarium” in the 2010 Box Art Exhibition at Pataka in Porirua. In 2011 she won the Public Choice Award at Pataka for her Box Art assemblage “Pandora’s Box”.
In 2015 she was commissioned by the Museum of Wellington create a box art piece representing John Plimmer and his contribution to the early life of Wellington. It is now part of the permanent collection at the Museum. Her work is held in many private and public collections both in New Zealand and overseas. Her ceramic works have been published in 3 books on International Clay Artists. Debbie has sold her Doll Art in the USA and the United Kingdom.
It is her vast experience in the realms of ceramics, doll art, sculpture, assemblages, and painting that enables her to create unique and innovative art works.
